How to Solve the Problem of Extend Volume Grayed out in Windows Server 2008?

Extend Partition by Using Windows Disk Management

With the built-in Disk Management, the goal of extending partition in Windows Server 2008 becomes realizable. Because it possesses several functions, such as, extend/shrink volume, format/delete partition, mark partition as active and change drive letter and paths. At the same time, all these features support the dynamic disk as well.

But unfortunately sometimes, you may come across the situation that the extend volume just grayed out so that you can not carry out the operation. Why? Because the snap-in Disk Management has some limitations on extending volume option, that is, it can only work with contiguous unallocated space. In this case, you have to get an unallocated space with the help of other software. Then, the process of extending volume with a specially designed partition tool, AOMEI Partition Assistant will be introduced to solve this problem.

Extend Partition by using AOMEI Partition Assistant

Compared to the built-in Disk Management in Windows Server 2008, AOMEI Partition Assistant has many advantages.

  • The operation is very simple.
  • The situation of "Extend Volume" grayed out will never happen.
  • The feature of "Extend Partition Wizard" can extend system volume without restarting the computer.

Two methods of extending system (C) drive with the powerful tool

The picture below is the main interface.

Extend Partition Wizard

Tips: download the AOMEI Partition Assistant Server Edition, install and launch it.

Method 1: extend system drive with "Extend Partition Wizard".

  • First, click the "Extend Partition Wizard" option, and in the pop-up window, select an operation method, and then click "Next". Here, the first method is recommended.
  • Second, in the pop-up window, select the "Automatic Mode for extending a partition", and click "Next". Or do not select the "Automatic Mode for extending a partition" option, but select the drive that you want to shrink in the next pop-up window.
  • Third, drag the slider bar to decide the size you want to extend, and then click "Proceed".

Case 2: there is an unallocated space on the disk.

  • Step 1: right click drive E, and select "Resize" option in the drop-down menu.
  • Step 2: drag the left end of the slider bar rightwards to get an unallocated space just behind system drive.
  • Step 3: right click drive C, and select "Resize". In the pop-up window, drag the right side of the slider bar rightwards to extend C drive.
  • Step 4: click "Apply" on the toolbar to commit the operations.

Apart from the methods mentioned above, there are still many other features, such as, merge, split, allocate free space, etc. Also, there are several versions that meet different users' need.
